We made a tiny bathroom feel bigger and brighter with these six steps

I recently completed the design and styling of THE monochrome bathroom of dreams.

This client had a vision of a fresh, bright contemporary look for their small space — a far cry from their previous ’90s style bathroom.

The tricky part — the size! The bathroom is part of a late 1980’s house and as with many UK properties built in the ’80s onwards, space is an issue.

Here are some of the ways we made the Monochrome bathroom feel bigger and brighter.

1. We switched out the P-shaped bathtub for a smaller, straighter one

Protruding items in any room can make a space feel cramped. The original bathtub was unnecessarily large with a P-shaped kink that stuck out and took up valuable space so we decided to replace it with a simpler rectangular design that served its purpose.

2. We used glass

We opted for the glass screen to accompany the bathtub. This allows light to travel through the space, where shower curtains would block it.

3. We kept it simple

Too many patterns can ‘crowd’ a room so we decided to keep it simple. Not a necessity to open a space up, but the client wanted a white bathroom and what the client wants, the client gets. We opted for matt white ceramic bathroom tiles from Homebase and a white bathroom suite from Victoria Plumbing, complemented by matt black fittings for a stylish and contemporary feel.

4. We used a magic mirror

We hung a stunning large tear-drop mirror above the vanity unit. This allows light to bounce around the room making it appear more spacious. In contrast to the sharp black, white and straight lines around the room, the mirror’s curves add a softness to the stunning new bathroom making it more inviting.

5. We tiled all the walls to the ceiling

We chose to extend the tiles to the ceiling by vertically stacking them. This instantly made the ceiling appear higher and the room feel larger.

6. We went green

We finished off the bathroom by styling it with plenty of greenery of all shapes and sizes, this included an indoor tree and trailing plants. Not only did we bring the outdoors in, but by placing the plants at different heights across the room, the space began to feel taller. The feel-good feeling that comes along with plants are, of course, an added bonus.

I am pleased to say the client loves their new bathroom, here’s what they had to say:

“I contacted Aman to give me ideas on how to finish my bathroom project. I gave her an insight into what we were looking for and she came up with a design for a clean, bright spacious area.”
